For its Fall 2022 runway show at Paris Fashion Week, Dior gave one of this year's biggest makeup trends, the clean makeup look, an unexpected twist. The fashion house's Creative and Image Director, Peter Philips, added a touch of silver eyeshadow to the inner corners of the eyes to illuminate the models' look.

While applying eyeshadow to the inner corners of the eyes isn't a revolutionary concept, this effect brightens the entire face, acting as a highlighter. "I wanted to do a very natural, strong look that glorified each girl's natural beauty," Philips told a group of beauty editors post-show over Zoom. "There was no highlighting, contouring, or tricks — just beautiful skin, nicely groomed eyebrows, and a little twist on the eye."

Adding silver to the inner corners of the eye may be a foolproof way to brighten up your complexion, but it's also a nod to the artwork by feminist Italian artist Mariella Bettineschi. The Dior show featured her artwork on the walls of the show, and like the women in her art who draw attention to their art by manipulating their gaze, the models' in the show' did too with a flash of silver."

Before reaching for the silver eyeshadow, Philips used Dior's Forever Clean Matte Foundation to perfect the models' base. He says this is his foundation of choice because it offers enough coverage for problem areas but still has a lightweight, second-skin finish. Then, he curled the lashes (no mascara) and groomed the brows with the Diorshow Kabuki Brow Styler.

To neutralize redness around the eye area, Philips swept the primer shade from Dior's Backstage Custom Eyeshadow Palette in 001 Universal Neutral on the models' eyelids. Then, he pushed a flat eyeliner brush into the palette's silver shadow and placed it on the inner corners of the eye, going a little outside the eye and a little inside. Next, he used a Q-Tip to push and drag the silver down towards the nose.

"If you push the silver up, it will become more of an eyeshadow. Adding it to the inner corner and dragging it down a bit towards the nose makes it a luminous spot," adds Philips.

While this silver detail was added to the clean makeup look, Philips says it can be adapted to any style of makeup, from smoky eyes to bold blush.

To tie the look together, the makeup artist chose the new reformulation of Dior's Addict high-shine lipstick in 100 Nude Look for the lip. The line includes a range of neutral shades, from brick red to beige.

And just like that, Dior took the guesswork out of highlighting your face when doing a clean, natural makeup look.
